Confidence. Focus. Respect.
A cooperative, noncompetitive martial art that helps children become calmer under pressure, stronger in body, and more confident in themselves.
- No experience needed
- No sparring or required tournaments
- Six class times each week
Martial arts without the pressure to fight or compete.
Some children thrive in sparring and tournament-centered programs. Others need a calmer way to build real skill. Aikido teaches children to blend, redirect, maintain balance, and respond with control rather than meeting force with force.
- Cooperative partner practice
- Peaceful conflict resolution
- Safe falling and movement skills
- Progress without tournament pressure
What your child can gain
Every class combines movement, cooperation, attention, and attainable challenges so children can grow at a steady, encouraging pace.
Confidence
Mastering new movements and progressing through ranks gives children visible evidence that patient effort pays off.
Focus & self-control
Structured practice helps children listen, follow a sequence, manage impulses, and return their attention to the task.
Coordination & fitness
Rolling, footwork, balance, and partnered movement build whole-body awareness, mobility, and healthy activity.
Respect & cooperation
Children learn that progress depends on caring for training partners, practicing safely, and contributing to the group.
Calm under pressure
Aikido gives children a repeatable way to pause, stay balanced, and make a more constructive choice in difficult moments.
Progress & achievement
Belts, stripes, and certificates recognize skill development while keeping attention on practice rather than comparison.

The attention children need to make meaningful progress.
Our two instructors bring more than 60 years of combined martial arts experience. Smaller classes allow them to observe each child closely, adjust instruction, and recognize progress that can be missed in a crowded room.

- Retired military veteran
- Extensive experience teaching children
- Supportive of varied learning needs
Our primary Youth Aikido teacher has extensive experience working with children who may be navigating ADHD, anxiety, or low self-confidence. Families are welcome to share relevant needs before the trial so we can help their child begin successfully.
A readiness assessment may be available.

What families often want to know
What is Aikido?
Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art that teaches students to maintain balance, blend with movement, and redirect force rather than clash with it. Practice develops coordination, awareness, composure, and control.
Is Aikido safe for children?
Safety is built into how we teach. Children learn age-appropriate movement, controlled partner practice, and safe falling skills with close instructor supervision. As with any physical activity, no martial art is risk-free, but our curriculum prioritizes cooperation and control.
Do children spar, fight, or have to enter tournaments?
No. Our Youth Aikido program does not use free sparring and does not require tournament participation. Children practice structured techniques with partners and learn to care for one another’s safety.
What ages can participate?
The regular Youth Aikido program is for ages 7–14. Children ages 5–6 may be considered individually through a separate Trial Assessment.
Is the trial class really free?
Yes. Children ages 7–14 may reserve a free trial in any available regularly scheduled Youth Aikido class. Advance booking is required, and we do not accept walk-ins. The separate assessment for ages 5–6 has a $15 reservation fee, refundable if the child is accepted.
What should my child wear to the trial?
Comfortable athletic clothing is appropriate for the first class. No uniform or previous martial arts experience is required. We will explain uniform options if your child joins the program.
How often should my child attend?
We recommend at least two classes per week for retention and steady progress. Because classes are offered six days per week, your family can choose different days as your schedule changes.
Can parents watch class?
Yes. Parents may observe and see how their child responds to the class. Alexandria Zen Center has a comfortable parent lounge, reading library, and tea bar within sight of the training area.
Can Aikido help a child who is anxious, easily distracted, or lacking confidence?
Many families seek structured activities to support focus, confidence, and emotional regulation. Our primary youth teacher has extensive experience adapting instruction for children with varied learning and emotional needs. We do not promise therapeutic outcomes, but we are happy to discuss your child’s needs before the trial.
Does Aikido teach practical self-defense?
Children learn awareness, balance, movement, safe falling, boundary-setting, and techniques for redirecting and controlling force. We also emphasize avoiding escalation and seeking help—important parts of responsible self-protection.
