Traditional values

Patient instruction

Safe, progressive learning

Supportive community

More than movement

Skills children carry beyond the dojo

Aikido gives children a structured place to practice how they meet challenge, work with others, and take responsibility for their growth.

01

Confidence

Children build earned confidence by learning carefully, practicing consistently, and seeing their own progress.

02

Focus

Clear instruction, Japanese forms, and partner practice help students learn to listen, concentrate, and respond calmly.

03

Respect

Bowing, dojo etiquette, and cooperative training teach care for instructors, classmates, and the practice space.

04

Resilience

Safe falling and progressive challenges teach children how to recover, try again, and stay composed when learning is difficult.

A real class, made approachable

What your child will experience

The trial is not a performance or a pressure-filled evaluation. It is an opportunity to participate, meet the instructors, and discover whether the dojo feels like a good fit.

Still wondering whether Aikido is right for your child?

Let them experience a class
Does my child need martial arts experience?

No. The trial class is designed for beginners. Instructors introduce each activity step by step and adjust the practice to the child's experience and comfort.

What happens during the trial class?

Your child will meet the instructor, learn basic dojo etiquette, join an age-appropriate warm-up, practice safe movement or falling skills, and experience cooperative partner training. The goal is to let your family see what a real class feels like.

Do children spar or fight?

Youth Aikido is cooperative rather than competitive. Children do not train to overpower one another. They learn controlled movement, balance, safe falling, awareness, conflict avoidance, and respect for a partner.

Can parents observe?

Yes. Parents may quietly observe the class so they can see the teaching style, class structure, and how their child responds to the practice.

What should my child wear?

Comfortable athletic clothing is all that is needed for the trial. Please arrive five to ten minutes early so your child can meet the instructor and settle in before class begins.

What ages does the program serve?

The Youth Aikido program is designed for ages 7–14. Families with a child approaching age seven may contact Alexandria Zen Center to ask about a readiness assessment.

How often should students attend?

Attending at least twice each week is recommended. Consistency helps children remember skills, feel connected to the class, build confidence, and progress without unnecessary frustration.
